Fullness of Deity
Entering human flesh
Born of a humble and holy woman
In far off back-water Bethlehem
Surrounded by creatures
That you formed
Through the spoken word
Yet you spoke not that day
But cried with discomfort.
Hunger and cold, your companions,
Hovered over you
Like smothering clouds.
You, who once accompanied,
Jacob’s holy children
In Pillar of Fire
And Pillar of Cloud,
Then huddled in a lightless cave
(In preparation for another cave)
Feeble…
You, who made all ex nihilo
Lay in a stone feeding-trough
Human…dust…weeping…wet…worn
Born of a humble and holy woman
In far off back-water Bethlehem
Surrounded by creatures
That you formed
Through the spoken word
Yet you spoke not that day
But cried with discomfort.
Hunger and cold, your companions,
Hovered over you
Like smothering clouds.
You, who once accompanied,
Jacob’s holy children
In Pillar of Fire
And Pillar of Cloud,
Then huddled in a lightless cave
(In preparation for another cave)
Feeble…
You, who made all ex nihilo
Lay in a stone feeding-trough
Human…dust…weeping…wet…worn
